| Title: Figurehead by Stefanie Rocknak This piece has been sold to the Mariners' Museum, Newport News, VA Wood: Iroko, from Sierra Leone. Carved entirely from wood left over from the Amistad project. Size: 10" by 16." Figure is approximately 10" tall, including base. Carving Difficulty: This wood was somewhat difficult to carve; it is extremely hard and unpredictable. Frame: Steel, completed by Butch Heal of Camden Welding Works, Camden, ME Comments: This piece was entirely inspired by the wood. It conveys a man struggling to escape the slave ship, the Amistad, if not slavery in general. The dramatic grain of the backpiece is entirely natural; it is a slice of heartwood. See this piece as it was being made.
