cambodian woman
by stefanie rocknak

Cambodian Woman was completed in 1996.
It is 13" tall and is carved from a single piece of
Basswood.

This piece was motivated by a photo of a woman who had been taken prisoner in Phnom Penh. (Tuol Sleng SP21). She would eventually be executed, and seemed to know this when her photo was taken.

I was moved by her numbed resolve. At the same time, it horrified me to think of what had happened to her and the other prisoners at Pol Pot's SP21. For what it's worth, this is my memorial to all of them.
